Since 2004, I have used Salomon trainers when mountain running. More than 10 years with different models which have covered my needs for the mountain in different races, the majority between 10 and 30km. Now new different trainers have come to my feet, the Salomon Sonic, the first urban Salomon shoe.
At first glance, we see that the top part of the shoe is very similar to that of its companions in order to run in the mountains and once worn, the offer very similar feelings. The first impression is that of looking at comfortable and versatile trainer, with a good response to different rhythms and terrains.
Top part and Laces
The top part of the shoe, despite being made from a mesh which is so perforated as the majority of the shoe for asphalt, the trainer has a good breathability and keeps the foot and offers a good sense of comfort.
With reference to the fit, in my opinion, it is the aspect where these trainers have taken one step forward. Normally Salomon made trainers with shoe trees that are not well adapted well to narrow feet. Now thought with the Sonic, the foot support has greatly improved thanks to the “Quick Lace” lacing system and “endofit” system which hugs the foot like a glove, and this results into a sense of security and comfort on the tread.
From the point of view of a triathlete, the trainer could be a good candidate; the only aspect which weakens the system is “Quicklace” lacing system. It is true that it is fast, but is not elastic. A small modification that would allow us to make an even faster transition.
Cushioning and Structure
This is a very stable trainer, with a drop of 8mm, and an EVA midsole which provides cushioning and comfort without losing reactivity during the race. Despite this, it is a trainer which is made for running at fast and medium rhythms, and that which doesn’t behave well to slow paces.
Durability and Grip
Its lightness doesn’t make it one of the toughest trainers on the market, despite the availability to a special anti-rubbing system, but its composition allows us to enjoy better traction on dry and wet surfaces.
The shoe has good cushioning without losing lightness. They are breathable and fit well around the foot. Details that make this good shoe for racing 10km or even half marathons. Due to its characteristics I wouldn’t recommend them for races of more than 20kms.
With the composition of the sole and the distribution of the studs, these make it a good companion for races in a mix of asphalt and compacted soil. It is an ideal trainer for runners who compete in the mountains with shoes of a Salomon brand and who want to have similar sensations in their training on asphalt.
Aspects in favour:
*Fast, light and reactive trainers
*Suggested for narrow feet
*The rear heel reinforcement is somewhat rigid and may cause some discomfort the first few days of use.
