Japan, 1995. Still far removed from the running “boom”. When “Runners” were still known as Athletes. Few brands (that is, hardly any), invested in R&D for this sport. This is where our friend Toshikazu Kayano comes into play

A prestigious Japanese engineer who is also passionate about athletics. He joined his two passions together and managed to create the most revolutionary trainer that had been seen up to that time, the first trainer for runners with pronation: Asics Kayano.
Almost a quarter of a century and 26 editions later, Kayano continues to be one of the leading models for ASICS. They help with stability in the stride, cushioning without compromising on lightness and maximum comfort. They are the maxims of a model that crosses thousands of finish lines each year.
After accumulating more than enough kilometres wearing them, we can confirm that the range continues to advance, taking “another little step” in almost every aspect. We highlight three substantial improvements.
Main characteristics.
Upper
With Kayano’s characteristically wide Upper with Jacquard Engineered Mesh technology (2019 update), the trainer acquires an improved and comfortable sense of “feeling” when making contact with the ground, as the foot never has the sensation of being “trapped”.
Drop
The classic 10mm drop of the ASICS is maintained in the models for men. Although in the women’s range, they increase this up to 13mm.
Midsole
The Twist Gel technology for the front cushioning is combined with Dynamic Duo Max to provide stability to both parts of the trainer. The classic ASICS GEL provides cushioning that, when combined with the Flyte Foam, improves the reactivity of the trainer stride.
Covering
Constructed using the MetaClutch system, which is based on stabilising the heel externally with a mesh between the sole and the actual heel. In this way, it manages to correct pronation and thereby stabilise the step.
Insole
The Ortholite Insole is already an ASICS classic and guarantees more than is demonstrated. Comfortable and long-lasting.
Sole
Another key Kayano feature is the system “guiding” the foot in the right direction. This is achieved through the ASICS Guidance Line system which is based on dividing the sole into different more or less flexible segments depending on the area and contact with the ground. The rubber continues to use the AHAR plus system, which is already known from previous models.
Who are they for?
For runners between 75 and 85 kg who have pronation and who are looking for good cushioning during their long runs.
As a competition trainer for the ½ Marathon and Marathon designed for rhythms of 4’30 to 4’45m/km.
As a second trainer for light runners on easy circuits.
